Application of FGI Static Var Generator in ferrochrome smelting in Zimbabwe

1.Project background

Recently, an Static Var Generator(SVG) equipment of FGI has been successfully put into operation in WEL MINING Smelting Company of Zimbabwe. Our company has put four equipment into operation continuously on the site. At present, all the equipment are in stable operation, which plays a key role in the management of power quality problems on the site and provides guarantee for the safe and stable operation of the site.

WEL MINING Smelting Company is a Chinese enterprise invested in Zimbabwe's industrial city of Quilu, relying on local chromium ore resources, the company mainly produces high-quality and high-carbon ferrochrome, and its products are exported to Europe.

In 2007, WEL MINING built a 3600KVA smelting furnace and began to put into operation, and then added No. 2 and 3 furnaces to put into operation successively, and the output will also increase from the original monthly output of 550 tons to the present 2,500 tons.

2.FGI scheme

Electric arc furnace steelmaking has advantages in terms of environmental protection, investment and efficiency, but there are power quality problems such as low power factor, harmonic pollution and three-phase imbalance in the use process, which affect the safety and stability of the power grid. In order to solve these problems, WEL MINING has equipped FGI Static Var Generator(SVG) products.

According to the power quality problems existing in the site, FGI put forward a targeted solution. Each arc furnace is configured with Static Var Generator(SVG), and the power quality problems generated by it are dealt with locally, without affecting the superior power grid, and the effect of stabilizing the power grid is achieved.

3.Application effect

FGI Static Var Generator(SVG) equipment has excellent functional performance, and can provide effective treatment for electric arc furnace, which has a prominent power quality problem.

Static Var Generator(SVG) can restrain the harmonics produced in the operation of electric arc furnace and deal with the problem of three-phase unbalance.

Static Var Generator(SVG) stabilizes the voltage to avoid the situation of other equipment failure due to drastic voltage fluctuations.
